Color Line's digital transformation with Telenor Maritime

New technology and increased availability of data is changing the way of working in the maritime industry. Color Line is at the forefront of this transformation, with a vision to be Europe’s leading shipowner within sustainable passenger and freight transportation. Their sustainability goals and optimisation objectives rely heavily on trustworthy and reliable data.

In a strategic move to meet their efficiency and sustainability objectives, Color Line has embraced Telenor Maritime’s digital solution, the Unified Hosting Service (UHS®), deploying it across their fleet to streamline data collection and leverage the full potential of high-quality data.

Seeking an open, agnostic data platform and increased data transparency

The rapid growth of OEM applications created a complex digital ecosystem, across Color Line’s fleet. Non-integrated systems caused data fragmentation and non-standardisation, hindering transparent data flow and full digitalization potential of the fleet. Color Line realized that adopting a holistic approach to data management was essential to meet their efficiency and sustainability goals.

“I believe the black boxes on board vessels today is a wrong and conservative mindset. People are reluctant to sharing data, but for what purpose? Ships are complex machines, and different parties need to work together in order to derive the full potential of vessel data,” says Robin Lavigne, Maritime Technology Specialist, Color Line.

Innovative Solution

Seeking an innovative solution for fleet digitalization, Color Line turned to their trusted connectivity provider, Telenor Maritime. With a shared philosophy of creating an open, agnostic data platform, they began to collaborate on the development of the UHS, aiming to increase transparency within the maritime industry.

“Telenor Maritime’s digital platform fits very well into our strategy and vision for digitalization. We want an open platform that is flexible, scalable and can address all our use cases on board,” states Are Paulsrud, Chief Technology Officer, Color Line.

Developing and Implementing

In close cooperation with Color Line, classification societies, OEMs and other shipowners, Telenor Maritime led a powerful, cross-industry partnership. The joint project engaged a diverse group of stakeholders who shared their knowledge, data, and applications. This insightful collaboration resulted in the launch of the innovative, on-board data-sharing platform.

"We anticipated a challenging journey. There are no cookbooks or standard data formats in this territory, which complicates matters. Despite this, the outcome has been very positive, thanks to the skilled team at Telenor Maritime, who has been an essential guide for the technicians and the entire process,” reflects Paulsrud.

The UHS helping Color Line reach their goals

The UHS provides Color Line with access to all on-board data in one platform, giving the crew and onshore management a common set of master data that can be trusted and reused. On board, crew can access data insights, which enables better decisions-making in their daily operations.
"Previously, our data was static and of limited quality, serving little purpose beyond regulatory compliance. Now, we have access to real-time data, offering unprecedented detail and utility," says Henrik Baråt Svensen, Superintendent Maritime Digitalization, Color Line.

Optimizing system performance in real-time advances the ship-owner’s sustainability strategy, making compliance reporting more efficient and cost-effective.
“We have an ambition to become more data driven and optimize operations. With Telenor Maritime's support, we're creating a comprehensive master data set that will unlock our organization's full potential at every level,” concludes Are Paulsrud, CTO, Color Line.
