Telenor Maritime connects the One Ocean Expedition— in the world’s most remote waters
As sailing ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl prepares for its year-long One Ocean Expedition in April 2025, Telenor Maritime has delivered a future-ready hybrid satellite connectivity solution onboard the historic sail ship.
In addition to the Eutelsat OneWeb LEO system — one of the first of its kind to be installed on a sailing vessel — the ship is also equipped with Starlink and Eutelsat VSAT, all secured with Telenor Maritime Cybersecurity. This system provides reliable, low-latency, and secure internet connectivity, even in the most remote parts of the ocean — including the ship’s planned voyage through the Northwest Passage, a rarely navigated and demanding Arctic route first completed by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen in 1906.
Installed ahead of the global voyage, the new solution demonstrates what’s possible with modern maritime connectivity – combining the strength of Eutelsat OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networkwith advanced onboard technology.
“We’re proud to contribute to the One Ocean Expedition and support Statsraad Lehmkuhl’s mission to raise awareness about ocean sustainability,” says Lars Erik Lunøe, CEO of Telenor Maritime. “Stable, high-speed connectivity is no longer a luxury at sea – it’s a necessity for safety, crew welfare, education, and research.”
With satellite connectivity from Telenor Maritime, students, researchers, and crew onboard Statsraad Lehmkuhl can stay connected throughout the voyage. This makes it possible to transmit data in real time, collaborate with teams on land, and share the journey with the world as it happens.
“We are very pleased to have Telenor Maritime as our partner for this expedition,” says Haakon Vatle, CEO of Statsraad Lehmkuhl and Expedition Leader of the One Ocean Expedition. “As we navigate through remote and challenging waters, reliable communication will be essential for the safety of the ship and the welfare of the crew. The ability to transmit data quickly and efficiently will also be crucial for the scientific research onboard and to engage the public and foster a global conversation about ocean conservation as the expedition goes on — whether it's sharing critical oceanographic data, research findings, or live-streaming educational content.”

The One Ocean Expedition is part of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, supporting global goals for ocean health, climate action, quality education, and international collaboration.
The expedition begins in Bergen during One Ocean Week in April 2025 and returns to Bergen for One Ocean Week in 2026, with port stops across three continents along the way.
